Sando Shack has been slinging katsu sandos from the corner of Manchester and Sutton for over a year. Sabroso Cocina Mexicana has had a full bar pouring margaritas since the summer of 2024. Ask a longtime Maplewood resident which of these is actually new and you'll get three different answers, because the honest one is: only one of them is, and all three are occupying addresses that have changed hands before.
That's the more interesting story here. Downtown Maplewood isn't experiencing a restaurant boom so much as a rolling, two-year game of musical chairs across four or five storefronts clustered around Sutton and Manchester. Concepts don't so much open here as inherit a location from whatever came before, and the pattern tells you something about what this stretch of the neighborhood actually rewards.
Art Outside Turns 23 This Weekend
First, the calendar. Schlafly Bottleworks hosts the 23rd annual Art Outside art fair Friday through Sunday, September 11 through 13, in its parking lot at 7260 Southwest Avenue. More than 60 local artists set up across mediums from ceramics to metalwork to woodworking, and the festival runs family-friendly hours (Friday 5 to 9 p.m., Saturday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sunday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.) with live music on rotation and Schlafly's full food and beer menu available inside the restaurant. Leashed dogs are welcome outside the tents. Since the festival takes over Bottleworks' own lot for the weekend, parking depends on nearby public lots and street spots, so the smart move is what Maplewood regulars already do: park once, walk the rest.

Four storefronts, four different operators moving in over five years, and every single one of them landed in a space someone else built out first. Even Bolyard's, the closest thing this stretch has to an institution, didn't open in its current building. Why the Corner of Sutton and Manchester Keeps Working
Two businesses on this stretch never rotate, and they're the reason the rest of the turnover doesn't scare off new operators. Schlafly Bottleworks has anchored the west end of downtown Maplewood since 2003, more than two decades of foot traffic, and Bolyard's has been a fixture since 2014, expanding rather than closing when it outgrew its original footprint. A USA Today reader poll named Bolyard's the third-best butcher shop in the country, and the shop still sources whole animals from Missouri farms for its sausages, bone broths, and smash burgers.
Put a working brewery-restaurant with two decades of history on one end of the block and a nationally recognized butcher shop on the other, and the storefronts in between become low-risk real estate for a restaurant concept, even when the concept itself is new to the address. Gamlin's didn't open on Sutton because the corner was empty. It opened because the corner already had customers.
What's Actually New to Try

Gamlin's, from the team behind Sub Zero Vodka Bar and Gamlin Whiskey House, is the genuine newcomer, five weeks old as of this month. The kitchen ferments its rosemary focaccia for 36 hours using imported Italian flour, and the bar pours from a spirits list arranged by category with half-ounce tasting pours if you want to build your own flight rather than commit to a full one.
Sando Shack, just over a year into its Maplewood run, moved from Tower Grove South because the former Boardwalk Waffles space gave it more room than its old spot. The katsu sando is still the draw, a panko-breaded cutlet on milk bread, alongside a karaage chicken version and a portobello mushroom take for anyone skipping meat. The owners still run their food truck in limited rotation at events like the St. Louis Harvest Festival in Tower Grove Park this fall, but the Maplewood storefront is now the main operation.
Sabroso, now heading into its third year on Sutton, is the second location of a St. Ann restaurant that's been building a following since 2021. The Maplewood spot has something the original can't offer: a full bar, since the St. Ann location sits too close to a church to serve alcohol. That difference alone has driven a lot of the crowd here, along with the cochinita pibil and quesabirria that made the original a destination in the first place.

A few minutes east on Manchester, Brentwood picked up its own new business this year: Good Clean Dog opened its regional flagship grooming studio in May 2026, built around a tip-free, cage-free model and staffed by groomers the company calls Groomicians. It's the first of four locations planned across the St. Louis area through 2026 and 2027, which means Brentwood got first pick.
South on Brentwood Boulevard, Richmond Heights got word this summer that the long-stalled second phase of The Boulevard finally has a plan attached to it. Minnesota-based Life Time, partnering with local developer Midas Hospitality, is planning a 263-unit apartment building called Life Time Living at 1120 South Brentwood Boulevard, with a 110,000-square-foot "athletic country club" and a 30,000-square-foot pool. Nothing opens this year, but it's the kind of announcement that changes what "a few minutes from the Galleria" will mean for whoever's shopping this corner of Richmond Heights next.
What's Next on the Calendar
After this weekend's art fair, the next fixed date on Maplewood's civic calendar is the Route 66 Street Fest on September 26, a family event with a car show, live music, and the same downtown shops and restaurants doing double duty as festival vendors. Great Pumpkin Glow follows on October 22. Both put the same few blocks of Sutton back to work, which is really the whole point of this stretch of the neighborhood.
